North Sumatra Animal Husbandry Agency head Teti Erlina Lubis said Tuesday that she had declared rabies endemic in Nias Island following the recent death of a local health agency head due to a bite from a rabies-infected dog.
North Nias health agency chairman Christian Zai was reported to have died on Thursday apparently after being bitten by his own dog.
Teti said in Medan, North Sumatra, that her team had conducted a thorough test on the dog and found that the animal was infected with rabies. She said she believed most dogs in Nias Island were infected with the disease.
“We have delivered a total of 18,000 doses of anti-rabies vaccine to Nias Island so far,†Erlina said as quoted by kompas.com.
