Prior to the formation of South Nias Regency in 2003, Nias had had only one regency: Nias Regency (Kabupaten Nias) with Gunungsitoli as its capital. It had 13 districts (kecamatan): Gunungsitoli, Hiliduho, Lahewa, Tuhemberua, Alasa, Gomo, Lahusa, Gidö, Idanögawo, Telukdalam, Sirombu, Mandrehe and Pulau-pulau Batu (Baru islands). Since 2003, Nias consists of two regencies: Kabupaten Nias (Nias Regency) in the northern region and Kabupaten Nias Selatan (South Nias Regency) in the south.

Nias Regency
When South Nias Regency was formed in 2003, former Nias Regency (Kabupaten Nias) keeps its name but renderred the southern part of Nias Island to the newly formed regency. The formation of South Nias Regency prompted the “expansion” of some of former districts into a number of new districts. Currently Kabupaten Nias consists of 31 districts: Gunungsitoli, Gunungsitoli Utara, Gunungsitoli Selatan, Gunungsitoli Idanoi, Hiliduho, Hili Serangkai, Botomuzöi, Alasa, Lotu, Namöhalu Esiwa, Lahewa, Lahewa Timur, Sirombu, Mandrehe, Sawö, Tugala Oyo, Bawölato, Idanögawo, Gidö, Tuhemberua, Sirombu, Lahömi, …

South Nias Regency
The South Nias Regency (Kabupaten Nias Selatan) was formed through Indonesian Law No. 9 dated 25 February 2003 regarding the Formation of South Nias Regency, West Pakpak Regency, dan Humbang Hasundutan Regency in the Province of North Sumatera.Inaugural ceremony of the creation of the South Nias Regency was held in Medan on 28 July 2003 by the Minister of Internal Affair on behalf of the President of the Republic of Indonesia. This was followed by the appointment of former North Sumatra Governor, the late Mr. T. Rizal Nurdin, as the acting Regent of South Nias.

The South Nias Regency has 8 districts: Pulau-pulau Batu (Batu Islands), Hibala, Teluk Dalam, Amandraya, Lahusa, Gomo, Lölöwa’u and Lölömatua. Teluk Dalam is the capital of the Regency.
