Indonesia: UK government praises the reconstruction process in Aceh

The British Government said it was impressed with the achievements of the Indonesian Government, as well as international donors and NGOs, in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Aceh two years after the devastating tsunami of December 2004. Parliamentary Under-Secretary Department for International Development Gareth Thomas acknowledged that the Indonesian government has achieved remarkable results which provide important lessons for other countries as they undertake massive reconstruction programs. The undersecretary met with the Director of the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) of Aceh and Nias Kuntoro Mangkusubroto in London from 8 to 10 of May 2007. (more…)

Researchers Find Large-Scale Death of Coral in Indonesia

Scientists have discovered that an earthquake two years ago in Indonesia lifted hundreds of kilometers of sea floor out of the water, causing the largest death of coral reefs ever recorded. As Chad Bouchard reports from Jakarta, this is only one of several threats facing Indonesia’s fragile marine ecosystems. (more…)

In this interview, Dr Mai Lin Tjoa-Bonatz shares some of her research on Eduard Fries’ life and activities and also on early Christian missionary work in Nias. Dr Tjoa-Bonatz was born in Frankfurt, Germany, obtained her MA degree in Art History, Archaeology and Southeast Asian Studies in Frankfurt in 1994 and Ph.D. with the research titled: “Shophouses in Penang, Malaysia” at the Technical University of Darmstadt in 2001. On Eduard Fries, she contributed the Chapter: “Idols and Art: Missionary Attitudes toward Indigenous Worship and the Material Culture on Nias” to the forthcoming Book: “Casting Faiths: Imperialism, Technology and the Transformation of Religion in East and Southeast Asia, edited by Thomas David Dubois. Aceh may be hit by another tsunami, says LIPI expert

Today, Nur Iman Gulo has a small shop and lots of customers, thanks to help from Church World Service. The simple building that serves as the shop and the home for her family of seven — including four kids and her mother-in-law — is located in Tegideu village, Sirombu, Nias Island, reports Lesvi Roselim, Church World Service-Indonesia. Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Black & Veatch organized a mid-term review of Earthquake and Tsunami Emergency Support Project Package 24 (ETESP-24) project under the auspices of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency NAD-Nias (BRR NAD-Nias) and Agency for Regional Development Planning (Bappeda) in Nias on the work completed in four of the eight sub-districts namely Botomuzõi, Hiliduho, Namohalu Esiwa, and Tugala Oyo. It aims to disseminate the preliminary information gathered across these sub-districts and to seek BRR and Bappeda’s support for the ongoing activities. (more…)

BRR seeks extension of mission in Nias
