JAKARTA: Germany, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, said recently it would provide an additional 8.33 million euros (approximately US$11 million) for rehabilitation and reconstruction in the Aceh province and Nias Island.

“This was announced at the conclusion of the German-Indonesian governmental negotiations held in Jakarta on March 27 by Christian Neumann, Regional Director of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development,” the German Embassy said in a press release sent to The Jakarta Post.

The new funds, the embassy said, will be allocated to ongoing programs in the areas of housing and settlement, vocational training, education, health, support to local governance, economic recovery and microfinance.

“The funds will also be used to further integrate women into the process of reconstruction,” the embassy said.

A massive earthquake and a deadly tsunami devastated both Aceh and Nias on Dec. 26, 2004.

Germany has committed up to 170 million euros (approximately $216 million) for reconstruction and rehabilitation in Aceh and Nias. — JP
