Nias rebuffs the idea of joining the “Tapanuli Province”

Nias religious, cultural and political figures have rebuffed the idea of joining the “Tapanuli Province”. In a meeting held last Saturday (2/12), Nias Regent, Binahati Baeha, asked the opinions of the Nias religious, cultural and political leaders and youth and  women representatives on whether Nias should support the formation of and eventually join in the Tapanuli Province. They unequivocally rejected the idea.

Officials oversee NGOs’ tsunami projects

A supervisory delegation from Taiwan inspected the progress of reconstruction work in several sites of tsunami-stricken Sri Lanka and Indonesia Nov. 28-Dec. 2, almost two years after the catastrophe devastated several South and Southeast Asian countries and killed more than 200,000 people.

Carpenter builds again for his family’s future

By Lesvi Roselim, ACT International Hilina’a village, Nias, November 13, 2006–The sound of wood-cutting machines echoes in the air as we approach a carpentry workshop in Hilina’a village, in the sub-district of Gunung Sitoli on the island of Nias. Children run out to greet us, followed by a man with a rag in his hand. The old, simple wooden structure is filled with half-finished windows and doors, timber materials and various small carpentry machines. Hezisokhi Zebua, a carpenter, has been with the Church World Service (CWS) livelihood-recovery program since April 2006. The CWS program in Indonesia is a member of Action by Churches Together (ACT) International, the global alliance of churches and church agencies working in emergencies.

Online Discussion: “Nias Reconstruction and Rehabilitation”, 13 Nov. – 22 Dec. 2006

Yaahowu website (Situs Yaahowu) will hold an Online Discussion on “Nias Reconstruction and Rehabilitation: Imagining Nias Conditions Post BRR-Nias Program” among Nias people who have access to internet. This Online Discussion, the second organised by Yaahowu will discuss the various issues relating to the Reconstruction and Rehabilitation process currently undergoing in Nias. Invitation to PIC-BRR Nias has been sent but, so far, the organiser has not yet recieved any response from BRR Nias. Discussion will start on Monday 13 November and end on 22 December. “Outsider” wishing to take part are welcome.

Moderate quake jolts Indonesia’s Nias Island

Jakarta – A moderate earthquake struck Nias Island off the western coast of Indonesia’s North Sumatra Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of structural damage or casualties, an official said.

The quake, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, struck off the west coast of Sumatra at about 9:01 a.m. (0201 GMT), said Novita, an official at Indonesia’s national Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG).  Full Story …

UNICEF opens new permanent schools in tsunami-ravaged Indonesia

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has opened the first two of nearly 370 permanent schools it has agreed to build in Indonesia in a $90-million project to replace those destroyed nearly two years ago by the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami, an agency spokesman announced today. The early nineteenth-century Omo Sebua, or traditional chief’s house, in the Omo Hada complex in Hilinawalö Mazingo is one of only five surviving buildings of its type on the island of Nias. Erected on stilts and towering more than 20 meters above the ground, the house, which served as both a royal residence and community meeting house, has a steep pitched roof and skylights and is adorned with some of the finest wood carvings in Indonesia. NGOs demand probe into BRR allegations

Anticorruption watchdogs are urging an exhaustive probe of possible irregularities in rebuilding projects at the Aceh and Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR).

The Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) and the Aceh Working Group (AWG) said Friday the agency’s alleged graft was “systemic”, so the investigation must be thorough.

Indonesian Children in Tsunami-Hit Area Malnourished, UN Says

By Robin StringerSept. 6 (Bloomberg) — Indonesian primary school children in disaster-hit regions Aceh and Nias are suffering stunted growth and retarded intellectual development, according to a study by the United Nations World Food Programme.

“The situation is quite concerning,” said program coordinator Charlie Higgins on the UN Web Site. “ Health and nutrition-related morbidity — the incidence of disease — is high.” Full story …
