PhD Numerical modeling of novel heat exchanger materials
The Faculty of Engineering Technology has about 270 employees and 1500 students and consists of three departments: Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering. The Thermal Engineering group is part of the Mechanical Engineering department. The Thermal Engineering group conducts pioneering research and teaches in the area of thermodynamics, energy conversion technologies and transport phenomena.
The Thermal Engineering group is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate: PhD Numerical modeling of novel heat exchanger materials.
This project aims are twofold:
- A new heat exchanger will be designed together with ATAG to enhance the efficiency of their domestic heating system.
- A numerical study will be made of new heat exchanger material existing of a fine metallic structure, e.g. a metalic foam. The surface of this material carbon is covered with carbon nano fibers (CNF’s). These fibers influence the fluid flow, and enlarge the heat exchanging surface. Prelimanary experimental research has shown that the presence of these CNF’s can enhance heat transfer by 50%. This depends very much on the CNF density and on the structure of the CNF itself. This numerical study will give directions in optimizing this new material.
Profile
The candidate will have a masters or equivalent degree in applied mathematics , applied physics or mechanical engineering and is expected to have extensive knowledge of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. The candidate should be able to work in a multidisciplinary work environment. Excellent communication skills both orally and written in English.
